Getting ashore
Ships dock at the commercial pier on Wharf Road, about three kilometres south-west of the centre. Locally run shuttle vans and taxis take you into town. Fit passengers can walk, but it is a long walk in the heat.
Watch-outs
Agree taxi fares before you set off, and use the official rate card where one is shown. Sellers at the market will bargain hard, so be patient. Sun protection and water are essential.
Port Vila town
The town has a market, craft shops and the Independence Park. The Vanuatu Cultural Centre and the National Museum explain the islands’ history and customs.
Iririki Island
Iririki is a small island in the harbour, reached by water taxi. It has a resort and a short walk with views back to the town.
Day trips
Snorkelling and diving sites lie around the bay, and tours go to the Mele Cascades and the Ekasup village. Book with a local operator who knows the conditions.
Food & shopping
Local food includes laplap, a baked dish of root vegetables, and fresh seafood. Markets sell fruit, vegetables and crafts.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the vatu. US dollars and Australian dollars are accepted in some places. Cards are accepted in larger hotels and shops.
Accessibility & mobility
The pier and the shuttle are accessible. Town pavements are uneven. Island trips involve boats and steps. Ask your operator for vehicles with step access.
