Getting ashore
Most ships dock at Havensight, also called the West India Company Dock. Crown Bay has a newer facility and is used at busy times. When more than six ships call in one day, some ships anchor and tender passengers into Charlotte Amalie. Check your ship’s notice for the berth.
Watch-outs
Taxis on St Thomas run on a fixed zone fare system, and the rates are regulated. Confirm the price with the driver before you set off. Traffic on the hills is slow, and the roads are steep and narrow. Keep an eye on the return time, as the ship’s departure time is firm.
Havensight and Charlotte Amalie
Havensight is a small downtown beside the dock, with more than fifty shops, many of them outposts of well-known boutiques. Charlotte Amalie, the capital, is a short taxi ride away. Its harbour-front shopping streets and the historic buildings are the main attractions for a walk.
Blackbeard's Castle and Skyride
Blackbeard’s Castle is an old tower on Government Hill, with views over the harbour. The Paradise Point Skyride, a cable car up Flag Hill, gives wide views over the bays. Both are best visited on a clear day.
Beaches and day trips
Magens Bay is one of the best-known beaches in the Caribbean, with a long curve of sand and calm water. Sapphire Beach and Coki Beach are popular for snorkelling. St John, the smaller island next door, is reached by ferry from Red Hook, and it is largely national park.
Food & shopping
Island food includes conch fritters, roti and fresh fish. Havensight and the waterfront are the easiest places to eat. Duty-free shopping applies to some goods, so check the rules for bringing items home.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the US dollar. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are common in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
Havensight is flat and step-free. Charlotte Amalie's streets are steep and cobbled in places. The Skyride has an accessible station at the bottom, but the top is a rough walk. Beaches vary, and some have steps or sand paths. Ask your tour operator for a vehicle with step access.
