## Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Port of Montevideo, about five minutes by taxi from the centre. Metered taxis wait at the pier. Drivers often offer a flat rate to popular spots, so compare with the meter before you agree.

## Watch-outs

Some ships anchor off the port and tender passengers, so check your notice. Sunday is quiet in the centre. Keep valuables close in busy areas.

## Ciudad Vieja and the Mercado del Puerto

The old town has colonial buildings and the Mercado del Puerto, a covered market famous for its grilled meats and parrillas. It is best at lunch.

## Rambla and the beaches

The Rambla is the long seafront promenade, with beaches along it. It is ideal for a walk or a bike ride. Pocitos is a popular beach district.

## Day trips

Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO town across the river, is reached by ferry from Buenos Aires or by bus. Punta del Este is a beach resort east of the city.
