Your ship may use the Broadway, Ore or Railroad dock. Check the berth and the approved way into town, including any shuttle or controlled movement on the pier. Dock arrangements can change, so follow your ship's instructions rather than assuming an unrestricted walk. Once beyond the port approach, Skagway's compact street grid is straightforward to explore. Save the correct return dock and all-aboard time before heading out. ## Start with the gold-rush story The [Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park visitor centre](https://www.nps.gov/klgo/planyourvisit/index.htm) , at Second and Broadway, is a good starting point. Ask about the film, historic buildings, ranger activities and the self-guided walking tour. Skagway boomed as a gateway for prospectors heading towards the Klondike in the late 1890s. Allow roughly two to three hours for Broadway, a few historic stops and a café break, excluding the trip from your berth. Check the day's seasonal openings; not every building is open whenever a ship calls. ## White Pass railway The [White Pass Summit Excursion](https://wpyr.com/excursions/product/summit-excursion/) follows the narrow-gauge railway into the mountains, with gorges, trestles and reminders of the gold-rush route. The railway lists about 2½-2¾ hours for this particular round trip. Other products go farther or include a coach, so compare the actual itinerary. The published 2026 adult fare is US$155 for the standard summit trip; check the current date, fare and cancellation terms before paying. Book ahead if this is your priority. ## Boarding point and passports An independent railway ticket does not automatically include boarding beside your ship. Follow the boarding location and reporting time on the booking. The standard White Pass Summit Excursion says no passport is required. Trips entering Canada by road or continuing beyond the summit have different document requirements: read the exact product instructions and check these before leaving home. Do not apply the summit train's rule to every Yukon excursion. Confirm that the return finishes comfortably before all-aboard. ## Shuttle or a longer walk? [SMART](https://www.smartbusak.com/product/downtown-shuttle/) serves the cruise docks and downtown. Check the ticket's validity, current fare and pickup point with the operator rather than assuming every shuttle is free or includes out-of-town sights. The Gold Rush Cemetery and Lower Reid Falls are a separate outing beyond the core historic blocks. Ask for route and trail conditions first, especially after rain. Dyea and the Chilkoot Trail start farther away and need transport and a specific plan. ## Food, weather and spending Broadway and the nearby streets have cafés, restaurants and shops. Choose a seated lunch or a hot drink between activities, and check menus before ordering. Tax and tips may be additional to the displayed price. For locally made crafts, ask about the maker and origin. Take a rain layer and warm clothing even if the waterfront is sunny; mountain conditions can be quite different. Carry US dollars or a card and save tickets and maps offline. ## Returning to the ship Allow time for the full dock approach and any shuttle queue. A train finishing in town does not mean you are back aboard. Use the ship's clock and all-aboard time, particularly if a rail or road tour has crossed a time zone or border. Keep the operator's contact and correct meeting point on paper as well as your phone. Emergency number: 911. ## Accessibility & mobility Confirm gangway, pier transfer and SMART lift or ramp arrangements for your date. Historic buildings and boardwalks have differing thresholds and surfaces. White Pass says lift-equipped cars are available on the summit excursion but space is limited: request the lift when reserving.
