Getting ashore

Ships anchor off Avalon, and passengers tender ashore to the harbour. The village is compact and walkable from the landing.

Watch-outs

There are no cars for most visitors. Golf carts and shuttles are the way around. Tender times depend on the sea, and the island’s weather can be fog in summer.

Avalon

Avalon is the island’s only town, with the Avalon Casino, a 1929 ballroom with a art deco design, and a waterfront of shops and restaurants.

Inland and the interior

Most of the island is a nature reserve with trails, bison and wild goats. Tours from Avalon head inland by bus, and the views are the highlight.

Descanso Beach and the bays

Descanso Beach is a short walk or golf cart ride from town, with a calm bay. Snorkel and kayak rentals operate from the beach.

Food & shopping

California food includes fresh seafood, fish tacos and local wine. Restaurants on the front are the easiest choice.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is limited on the island.

Accessibility & mobility

Avalon is flat and compact, and golf carts can take visitors with mobility needs. Inland trails are steep and rough. Ask your operator about accessible transport.
