Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Newport waterfront, within walking distance of the town centre and the harbour. Check your ship’s notice for the berth and any shuttle.

Watch-outs

Newport is a busy summer resort, and parking and traffic are heavy on sailing weekends. Book mansion tickets in advance. Weather on the coast can be cool and wet, so bring a layer.

The harbour and downtown

Bannister’s Wharf and Thames Street have shops, galleries and restaurants. The harbour is busy with yachts and ferries, and the walk along the waterfront is pleasant.

The Gilded Age mansions

Newport’s mansions, including The Breakers and Marble House, were built by wealthy families in the late 19th century. Tours are self-guided or guided, and the grounds are good for a walk. Allow a half day for one or two houses.

Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk runs along the coast for several miles, with views over the Atlantic. Parts of the path are uneven and steep.

Food & shopping

Seafood is the speciality, including clam chowder and lobster rolls. Restaurants on Thames Street are the easiest choice. Shops in the old town are open most of the day.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is good in town.

Accessibility & mobility

The waterfront and downtown are mostly flat, but older streets are cobbled. The mansions vary in access, so check each house before you go. Cliff Walk has uneven and steep sections.
