Getting ashore
Most ships berth at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro. Carnival ships use the Long Beach Cruise Terminal , a large white dome next to the Queen Mary. Both sit more than 20 miles south of the airport. The walk from ship to terminal exit is short. You are not in downtown Los Angeles yet.
Watch-outs
San Pedro and Long Beach are different ports. Check which one your ship uses. Distances in Los Angeles are long. A taxi to Santa Monica or Hollywood can cost a lot and take time in traffic. The first taxi queue may be for airport runs. Walk further for a shorter local ride. Summer sun is strong on open piers.
Getting around San Pedro
From the San Pedro terminal, downtown San Pedro is a short taxi or rideshare. The free DASH shuttle may run on some days. A taxi into San Pedro town is about $10–15. Long Beach has the Queen Mary next door and a short walk to shops. Name the exact terminal on the way back.
Taxis & ride apps
Taxis and Uber/Lyft wait at both terminals. Agree the fare or check the app price before you leave. A short hop in San Pedro or Long Beach is about $10–20. Longer rides to the beaches or downtown run higher. The rank is outside the terminal exit. On return, give the terminal name from your papers.
What to do nearby
In San Pedro, the Battleship Iowa and the waterfront sit close to the terminal. Long Beach has the Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific a short ride or walk away. Both ports have shops and food near the exit. Ask for a local map at the terminal.
Going further
Santa Monica, Venice, and Hollywood take 30–60 minutes or more by car, depending on traffic. Book a return in advance. Public transit is limited from the cruise terminals. Most people use a taxi, rideshare, or a ship tour for longer trips.
Food & shopping
San Pedro has waterfront restaurants and shops a short ride from the terminal. Long Beach has options near the Queen Mary and downtown. Cards are widely accepted. Prices are about standard US tourist rates. Tipping is expected.
Opening times & connectivity
Shops open around 10. Many close by 6 or 7. Mobile signal is good. Some terminal and waterfront spots offer free Wi-Fi. Use the currency link for US dollars.
Accessibility & mobility
Ask the ship what the gangway is like on the day. The port pages disagree about the parking shuttle. The cruise FAQ says Parking Concepts shuttles on ship days are wheelchair accessible, and it suggests you drop passengers and luggage at the terminal before you park. The free-to-public page says the courtesy shuttles are not wheelchair accessible. Do not assume either sentence until you recheck. Parking Concepts calls the lot handicap accessible. That is the lot, not the ship and not the promenade. The Harbor Boulevard walk and the Battleship Iowa are not described as step-free on the pages opened. Metro's disability fare is a discount on the bus, not a promise that J Line 950 stops at the gangway.
