Getting ashore

Cruise ships berth at one of Southampton’s terminals, including the newer Horizon terminal at Dock Gate 10. The walk from the ship to the terminal exit is short. You are close to the city center. A taxi into town is about £5.

Watch-outs

Terminal numbers vary by ship. Use the address on your papers. The first taxi queue may be for airport or longer runs. Walk further for a short ride into the city or to the station. The waterfront can be windy.

Getting into Southampton

The city center is a short taxi or walk from most terminals. The train station is about a five-minute cab ride. Trains run about four times an hour to London, taking 70–90 minutes. Buses also serve the area. On the way back, name the exact terminal.

Taxis & ride apps

Taxis wait outside the terminals. A ride into town is about £5. Agree the fare before the car moves. Uber operates in Southampton. The rank is at the terminal exit. Give the terminal name from your documents on return.

What to do nearby

The city center has shops, the old walls, and the SeaCity Museum a short ride or walk away. The waterfront has restaurants. The train station is convenient for a trip to London if time allows.

Going further

London is 70–90 minutes by train. Book a return ticket in advance. Longer trips need a full day. Most passengers stay in the city or take the train.

Food & shopping

The city center has restaurants and shops. The waterfront has casual food. Cards are widely accepted. Prices are about standard UK rates.

Opening times & connectivity

Shops open around 9 or 10. Many close by 5 or 6. Mobile signal is good. Some spots offer free Wi-Fi. Use the currency link for British pounds.

Accessibility & mobility

Step-free travel depends on the terminal and the ship, not on a pin in the city centre. Dock gates are manned, and Visit Southampton says the terminals have accessible entrances, toilets and seating, with extra help if you tell the cruise line before you sail. Go-Mobility (02380 006090) is the accessible taxi number the city publishes. Southampton Central is not uniformly step-free: check National Rail for lift status on the day, and do not assume a walk quoted for City or Horizon works from QEII or through the docks with a wheelchair. A short distance on a map is not a level route.
