## Getting ashore

The new passenger terminal at Portsmouth International Port is modern and well organised. A free shuttle runs to the town centre, and it is an easy walk for those who prefer to stroll. The terminal has shops and services for departing passengers.

## Watch-outs

Portsmouth is a naval city, and the Historic Dockyard is a short distance from the port. Traffic and parking are busy at weekends. Weather in the south of England is changeable, so bring a waterproof.

## Historic Dockyard

The [Historic Dockyard](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Portsmouth+Historic+Dockyard) is home to HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, the Mary Rose museum and HMS Warrior. Allow at least half a day. Tickets are often bookable in advance.

## Gunwharf Quays and the seafront

Gunwharf Quays is a waterfront shopping and dining area with outlets and restaurants. The Southsea seafront has a promenade, Southsea Castle and views across the Solent.

## Day trips

The Isle of Wight is reached by ferry from Portsmouth or Gosport, with the Needles and Osborne House as the main sights. Winchester, the old capital of England, is about 30 minutes by train.

Portsmouth is known for fish and chips, and for seafood on the harbour. Gunwharf and the Old Portsmouth area have cafés and pubs.

## Money & connectivity

The currency is the pound sterling. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and ATMs are common in the centre.

## Accessibility & mobility

The terminal and the shuttle are step-free. The Historic Dockyard is largely level, but the ships have steps and gangways. Old Portsmouth has cobbles. Ask the attractions about accessibility before your visit.
