## Getting ashore

Berthing depends on the season. From November to April, ships tender passengers to Patong, the main tourist beach. From May to October, they dock at Phuket Deep Sea Port at Ao Makham. Some overnight stops do both, with tenders first and a later reposition to the dock. The dock has one berth, so tenders are more likely. The tender ride to Patong is about 1.5 km.

## Watch-outs

Patong is lively, with bars and street markets, and the beach can be crowded. Taxi drivers may quote high prices, so agree the fare first. In the wet season, the sea can be rough and the tender may be cancelled. Keep the ship's return time in mind.

## Patong beach and the strip

Patong beach is the main tourist area, with a long sandy bay, cafés and shops. The Bangla Road night area is busy after dark. Jet skis and boat trips leave from the beach.

## Phuket Town

The old town is a short drive from the port. Its Sino-Portuguese shophouses, colourful facades and weekend walking street make it one of the best places to see the island's character. Allow a few hours.

## Islands and day trips

Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay are popular boat trips, usually from the Patong or Chalong piers. Trips are long and busy, so check the return time and the operator's safety record.

## Food & shopping

Thai food is good value, from street stalls to seafood restaurants. Night markets sell souvenirs, and many shops accept cards. Haggling is normal in markets.

## Money & connectivity

The currency is the Thai baht. Cards are accepted in larger places, but cash is needed for markets and taxis. ATMs are common in Patong and Phuket Town.

## Accessibility & mobility

The tender landing and the boat step are the main barriers. Patong's beach promenade is level, but the beach itself has sand and steps. Boat trips to the islands involve gangways and steps. Ask your operator about accessible vehicles and boats.
