The port area has four harbour sections: Victoria Harbour for dry goods, Uddebo for liquid products, and the industrial quays of LKAB and Cementa. The old iron ore quay is used by government icebreakers and for cruise calls. Luleå is visited mainly by smaller ships and superyachts. Ask the ship which quay it will use and whether a shuttle is provided. Check the live schedule and the ship's port notes for your call. ## For walkers and architecture fans Luleå received town status in 1621, and a fire in 1887 destroyed most of the town. Kulturens Hus, the arts and congress centre, houses the tourist office, the city library, an art hall, concert halls, a café and restaurants. Norrbottens museum, the county museum, holds archaeological finds. Teknikens Hus, on the campus of Luleå University of Technology, is a hands-on science centre for all ages. The railway museum, Norrbottens Järnvägsmuseum in Karlsvik, has steam locomotives. The annual festivals, held mostly at the harbour, draw many domestic tourists. Check opening hours before you visit. Gammelstad, about 10 km north-west of the town, is a UNESCO-listed church town reachable by local bus. Its stone church was built in 1492, and the village has 408 cottages, an open-air museum called Hägnan, small craft shops and a café. Allow several hours for the village and for the bus journey. ## For nature and outdoor fans The Luleå archipelago has more than 700 islands, and its coastal water is brackish, a mix of salt and fresh water. Several tour boats run to a timetable, and some offer themed trips on nature, culture, art and food. Summer tour boats visit Klubbviken on Sandön, a stop with a beach. A seashore walk around the city is another option. Timetables and fares are not given here, so check with the tour operators before you plan a day on the water. ## For shoppers Central Luleå has a large selection of shops, cafés and restaurants, and most shops downtown open all week, including Sundays. Automatic teller machines accept major credit cards, and most shops, restaurants and bars take them too. Some charge a SEK 5 fee or set a minimum purchase of SEK 50 to 100, so check before you pay by card. English is widely spoken in shops and restaurants. In the city centre, everything is within walking distance. ## For eaters and drinkers Central Luleå has cafés and restaurants, and some of the city's finest restaurants are in Gammelstad, about 10 km north-west of the centre. Kulturens Hus also has a café and restaurants. The Gammelstad village is a place to spend several hours, so a meal there works well for a longer day out. Check opening hours for the restaurants before you set out. ## Getting around and money Local LLT buses cost 20 kr a trip. If you will make more than four trips, a three-day tourist pass costs 80 kr from the tourist office. Local buses leave from Smedjegatan in the middle of town, and weekend night buses run roughly hourly from midnight to 03:00 from most stops, at a higher fare. Luleå Central Station is at Prästgatan 20, and the bus station is about 200 m from the train station. The TaxiKurir Luleå app calculates fares from the route. The airport at Kallax is about 5 to 7 km from the centre, depending on the measure, so check a map. A shuttle bus to the centre costs 50 kr each way. The currency is the Swedish krona (SEK), and English is widely spoken.
