Getting ashore
Ships berth at the port of San Sebastián, the small capital of La Gomera. The town centre is a short walk from the quay.
Watch-outs
The island is hilly, and the roads are steep and winding. Taxis are limited, so book a driver for trips outside town. Sun protection is important.
The old town
The old town has whitewashed houses, the Torre del Conde, a 15th-century tower, and the church where Columbus is said to have prayed before his voyage.
Garajonay National Park
Garajonay is a UNESCO laurel forest on the island’s peak, with walking trails through the mist. Tours from the port are the simplest way to visit.
Beaches and villages
Playa de Santiago and the small villages of the north-west are reached by road. Some have small beaches and seafood restaurants.
Food & shopping
Canarian food includes papas arrugadas with mojo sauce and fresh fish. Local honey and palm honey are good buys.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
The port and the old town are flat near the seafront, but the streets are steep. The national park involves forest paths and steep ground. Ask your operator for vehicles with step access.
