## Getting ashore

Cruise ships berth at the [Port of Málaga](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Port+of+Malaga+cruise+terminal) . Larger ships use Terminals A and B on the eastern dock, at Levante. You are not in the old centre there. The way in is a bus, or a long walk by the water. Smaller ships use [Terminal El Palmeral](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Terminal+El+Palmeral+Malaga+Spain) . That terminal sits on the boulevard beside the city. You step off next to the waterfront shops. Inside the cruise building are a duty-free shop, a tourist desk, an ATM and a currency desk. Read the terminal name on your papers. Only El Palmeral is the short stroll.

## Watch-outs

The [Alcazaba](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Alcazaba+Malaga+Spain) stands on a hill above the Roman theatre, and [Gibralfaro](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Castillo+de+Gibralfaro+Malaga+Spain) is the fort above it. The path up is steep. A lift reaches the palace, about halfway, and no further. The hop-on hop-off bus stops at the top if you skip the climb. Lanes in the old centre are narrow. At the market and along the quay, wear your bag in front. The seafront is open to the sun at midday, with little shade. Take water if you will be walking then.

## Getting into the city

From [Terminal El Palmeral](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Terminal+El+Palmeral+Malaga+Spain) the [Cathedral](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Malaga+Cathedral+Spain) is about a five-minute walk. You come out toward [Plaza de la Marina](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Plaza+de+la+Marina+Malaga+Spain) , the walking entrance to the centre. From the Levante terminals, town is a ride, or a walk of about 15 minutes, about 2 km, to [Plaza de la Constitución](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Plaza+de+la+Constitucion+Malaga+Spain) and Calle Puerta del Mar. The path stays by the sea and is mostly flat. When a cruise ship is at Levante, a public bus runs from those terminals to Plaza de la Marina. EMT buses stop near that square if you would rather ride back.

## Taxis & ride apps

Taxis wait at ranks outside the terminals. They do not sit beside the gangway. Fares are metered. Ask what the ride will cost before the car moves. A taxi to the airport takes about 20 to 25 minutes, and longer if the roads are busy. Uber runs in Málaga. Set the pick-up where your terminal lets cars stop. On the way back, name Terminal A, Terminal B or El Palmeral, the one printed on your papers.

## What to do nearby

From [Plaza de la Marina](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Plaza+de+la+Marina+Malaga+Spain) , the [Cathedral](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Malaga+Cathedral+Spain) is just ahead. Calle San Agustín, a short walk on, leads to the [Picasso Museum](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Museo+Picasso+Malaga+Spain) in the Buenavista Palace. The Alcazaba gardens and the Roman theatre sit just beyond, at the foot of the hill. [Muelle Uno](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Muelle+Uno+Malaga+Spain) is the row of shops and cafés on the quay. The Centre Pompidou Málaga is on that waterfront. The Palmeral is the shaded walk beside it. For the beach, the lighthouse is about 200 metres from the eastern dock, and the sand starts just past it.

## Going further

[Málaga Airport](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Malaga+Costa+del+Sol+Airport) is 8 km from the port. EMT Line A runs from the city centre out to the airport. [María Zambrano](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Estacion+Maria+Zambrano+Malaga+Spain) station is about 1 km away, with fast trains to Córdoba, Seville, Madrid and Barcelona. Ronda, Mijas, Marbella and [Granada](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Granada+Spain) are bus rides from the city bus station, not a walk from the ship. The Alhambra needs a ticket booked before you land. The ride there and back uses the day. Beaches further along the Costa del Sol are a separate bus or taxi.

## Food & shopping

Eat in the old centre, not in the terminal. [Atarazanas Market](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mercado+de+Atarazanas+Malaga+Spain) is a short walk for fried fish, a small plate and a glass of Málaga wine. Espetos are sardines grilled on a spit, and you will see them by the beach. Tapas bars fill the lanes off [Calle Larios](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Calle+Larios+Malaga+Spain) . Larios and the streets toward the Guadalmedina river are where the shops are. The duty-free in the terminal is for a bottle on the way back. It is not where you go for lunch.

## Opening times & connectivity

Smaller shops often open Monday to Saturday, about 09:30-13:30, and again from 16:30-20:00. Large stores commonly stay open from about 10:00 to 21:00 or 22:00, and some open on Sunday. Near the beach in summer, shops may stay open past 22:00. These hours are the usual pattern. The cruise terminals have free Wi-Fi. Many cafés in the centre will share theirs if you buy a drink. Spanish is the local language. English is widely spoken around the port and the cathedral. For police, fire or an ambulance, call 112.

## Accessibility & mobility

The terminals have lifts and adapted toilets. Security can provide a wheelchair on the pier. Ask the ship about the gangway before you go ashore. El Palmeral is the level walk into the centre. The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro are slopes and steps, so neither fort is a wheelchair route. If your ship is at Levante, book a car that can take a wheelchair, and give that terminal as the return address. A short line on a map does not mean a flat path from every ship.
