A tourist information office is nearby. Another report says the pier sits in an industrial port, and walking out is not recommended. The two accounts differ on how close the ship is to amenities, so plan on a shuttle or an arranged taxi, and check the ship's daily programme for the shuttle times and stops. The Port of Richards Bay is operated for cargo and cruise by the Transnet National Ports Authority, on a 30 km\u00b2 lagoon fed by the Mhlatuze River. The port as a whole is mainly a bulk harbour, handling coal, liquid bulk and breakbulk, so ask the ship which berth cruise ships use. Summer, from December to February, is hot and humid with the most rain. May, August and September are the most comfortable months."],["Getting around and money","Richards Bay Airport has domestic flights, operated by Airlink to Johannesburg. From the port gate, the realistic options are a shuttle, a taxi or a transfer arranged by the ship. Use only an arranged or authorised taxi, as taxi pricing can be an issue, and treat rideshare apps as unreliable for cruise planning. Public transit is not recommended. The waterfront and Boardwalk area is about 15 to 30 minutes away. Rental cars suit only confident independent travellers, and most guests take cruise-organised tours. Allow 90 to 120 minutes to get back to the ship. The currency is the rand (ZAR). Use only ATMs inside a mall or other building, cover the PIN, and watch for machines that keep the card. Most retail stores accept credit cards, but carry local cash for taxis, markets, tips and small vendors. Urban mobile coverage is good, but rural and wildlife areas vary. Carry the ship card and photo ID, and watch for unofficial guides and petty theft. Sun protection and water are essential."],["For walkers and architecture fans","Richards Bay is the gateway to Zululand, the central KwaZulu-Natal region that includes the port and the adjacent Hluhluwe Game Park. The Zulu tribe dominates the region, and its customs and historical traditions are visible throughout it. The name Zulu derives from an early chief whose descendants were called aba-kwa Zulu, or people of Zulu. Their capital, Ulundi, lies north of the Tugela River. Much of the region is a hilly interior with some coast, where it is usually hot and humid. English is widely understood in tourism, and Zulu is common locally. South Africa has 11 official languages, and Afrikaans is widely spoken."],["For nature and outdoor fans","Lake Mzingazi, on the edge of town, is home to crocodiles and hippos, and its vegetation suits bird-watching. Enseleni Nature Reserve has wildebeest, reedbuck and zebra, plus hiking trails. Alkantstrand Beach has a viewing platform for whales and humpback dolphins. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is a major wildlife reserve, 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way, and planning 6 to 8 hours for it is suggested. St Lucia and the iSimangaliso Wetlands offer boat and wildlife excursions, 1.5 to 2 hours each way, for a 5 to 7 hour day. A Zulu cultural experience takes 3 to 5 hours."],["For shoppers","Boardwalk Inkwazi is the closest easy shopping and dining area, with an eclectic mix of shops, and the port often provides a shuttle to it. The marina has caf\u00e9s and bars with free Wi-Fi. Richards Bay has several malls with boutiques and specialty shops selling curios. The Gallery specialises in local wood carvings, from furniture to souvenirs, so check that wooden items were treated for termites. No particular restaurants are named here, so ask at the tourist information office for suggestions. Shopping hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 14:00, with malls often open until 21:00."]],"access":"Cruisedeals notes that accessibility is challenging, given long drives, vehicle steps and heat, so accessible tours should be booked in advance.
