Getting ashore
Ships dock at Môle I of the port of Dakar. The city centre is less than a mile away. Taxis wait outside the main entrance.
Watch-outs
Agree the taxi fare with the driver before you set off, and expect to be approached by sellers and guides. Keep valuables close, and check current safety advice before you go.
Plateau and the city
The Plateau is the business and administrative centre, with colonial buildings, the cathedral and the markets. The Marché Kermel is a lively covered market.
Gorée Island
Gorée Island is a UNESCO site across the bay, reached by ferry in about 20 minutes. Its slave house and colonial buildings are a sombre and important visit.
Lac Rose
Lac Rose is a salt lake with pink water, about an hour’s drive north. Tours run from the port.
Music and the markets
Dakar is known for mbalax music and the arts. Galleries and cultural centres host performances, and the markets sell textiles and crafts.
Food & shopping
Senegalese food includes thieboudienne (fish and rice), yassa chicken and bissap juice. Restaurants on the Corniche are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFA franc. Cards are accepted in larger hotels, and cash is needed elsewhere. ATMs are in the city.
Accessibility & mobility
The port and the Plateau are on hills and busy streets. Gorée has steep, uneven lanes and steps. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles and ferry access.
