## Getting ashore

Le Port is a docked arrival, so a tender is not usually needed. Wind can still disrupt operations, so confirm the arrival in your cruise documents or onboard information. The port is commercial, fishing, naval and cruise all at once, so passengers usually cannot walk out of the gate. The ship or a port shuttle is the usual way out. Bring your ship card and photo ID, and check the passport requirements in your cruise documents, as they depend on clearance. Allow for port gates and any delay at the terminal, and plan on about 90 minutes to get back to the ship, with time for traffic and queues.

## For walkers and architecture fans

The capital, Saint-Denis, is the main town near the port. It has colonial architecture, markets, gardens and museums, and a visit takes 2 to 3 hours on site. Plan 4 to 5 hours in total for the visit, including travel. Travel time is 20 to 30 minutes, so check whether that is each way or the return before you set off. The covered market is a rainy-day option. Confirm the transport plan for the return journey before you go into town.

## For nature and outdoor fans

The volcano is the big day out. The Piton de la Fournaise viewpoint is 2 to 3 hours each way, so the trip is usually a long guided day of 6 to 8 hours and only suits a long port call. The Salazie Cirque and Hell-Bourg take in waterfalls, mountain scenery and a Creole village. They need 1.5 to 2 hours each way, or 5 to 7 hours in total, and are best done with a guide. The Aquarium of Réunion and the west coast beaches are 30 to 60 minutes away, or 2 to 4 hours in total. Check sea conditions and beach services before you go, and swim only at supervised beaches. Cyclone season and heavy rain can affect mountain roads. September, July and August are the most comfortable months, while January to March are the rainiest, based on 10 years of data, so check the forecast close to sailing.

## For eaters and drinkers

Food detail for this port is limited, so ask ship staff for current recommendations before the call. Saint-Denis is the main place to find a meal, because the sights and markets are concentrated there. The Saint-Denis markets, including the covered market, are the main place to shop for local goods, and they are a good option when it rains. Carry local cash for market purchases, as cards are better at more formal businesses. Eating near the port is not described, so plan to eat in Saint-Denis.

## Getting around and money

Ship or port shuttles likely run to the gate or into the city. Taxis wait just outside the gate, but supply is limited, and rideshare is limited and variable. Public transport is possible, but it is not ideal for a short call. A rental car suits experienced drivers, because mountain routes take extra time. No taxi or bus fares are given here, so agree a price in advance and check the total before you set off. Watch for taxi pricing problems, unofficial guides and petty theft. The euro is the expected currency, so check before you go. Carry local cash for taxis, tips, toilets and small vendors. Mobile coverage is good in towns and varies in the mountains, so plan meeting points before you leave the ship. French is the main language, and English varies with tour operators.

## Accessibility & mobility

The sources read do not describe the accessibility of the port, the shuttle or the town. Mountain routes take extra time, and the volcano and cirque trips are full days with walking. Ask the ship about the gangway, the port shuttle and step-free options before booking a tour.
