Getting ashore
Ships sail up the river mouth to dock alongside the wharf. The upgraded terminal has a duty-free shop and a tourist information office. The town centre is close to the river.
Watch-outs
The river entrance is dramatic, and the wind can be strong. Parking near the port is limited, so use a taxi or walk. Shops close early on Sundays.
Town and river
The old town is on the river, with restaurants along the waterfront. Ferragudo, across the water, is a fishing village with a pretty square.
Algarve beaches
The sandstone cliffs and beaches of the western Algarve are the main draw. Praia da Rocha is the nearest beach resort, reached by bus or taxi.
Lagos and Benagil
Lagos, to the west, has a historic centre and beaches. The Benagil cave is reached by boat from the coast, weather permitting.
Food & shopping
Portuguese food includes grilled sardines, seafood rice and custard tarts. Local markets sell fresh fish and fruit.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and ATMs are common in town.
Accessibility & mobility
The wharf and the river front are flat. The old town has steps, and the cliff paths are rough. Boat trips involve steps. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
