Getting ashore

Cruise ships dock at the harbor in Funchal. The walk from the ship to the terminal is short. From the dock, the center of town is a 15 to 20 minute walk, slightly uphill. The path is paved but uneven in places. Taxis are available at the pier.

Watch-outs

The walk into town is uphill and can be hot. The pavement is uneven. Agree taxi fares before you leave. The first taxis may be for tours. Walk further for a city ride. Note how far along the quay your ship is.

Getting into Funchal

Walk out of the dock and head toward the center. The path is about 15-20 minutes and slightly uphill. No regular public bus is listed from the pier for this hop. Taxis wait if the walk feels long. A printable map is available at the port.

Taxis & ride apps

Taxis line up at the pier. A short ride into the center is about €8-10. Ride apps are limited. Name the cruise dock for the return. The rank is outside the terminal.

What to do nearby

Walk into the center for the market, shops, and the cathedral. The waterfront has cafes. This area is the main stop and needs no ticket for the streets.

Going further

The botanical gardens and viewpoints are short taxi rides. These take time. Book if you want a guided visit. Stay in the center if the ship has a short stay.

Food & shopping

The market and streets have local crafts and cafes. Carry small bills. Ask the price if no menu is posted. Many places take cards.

Opening times & connectivity

Shops open about 9 to 6. Portuguese is the language, with English in tourist areas. WiFi is available in cafes. Save a map of the dock offline. Ask staff for the emergency number.

Accessibility & mobility

Do not call the way ashore step-free. APRAM tells people on foot to stay out of the traffic lanes, because heavy vehicles move inside the port, and it can close the Pontinha without notice. The Zona Velha is narrow cobbles. The cable car is a steep climb of about 15 minutes; this note does not claim the stations or the cabins take every wheelchair. Visit Madeira says some Funchal taxis are approved for wheelchair users. Ask for one before you need it. A short distance on the map is not a step-free route from Cais 8, or from Cais Norte, to the cathedral.
