## Getting ashore

The pages read do not name the berth. The CruiseMapper page says the port has 15 docking facilities, including piers and wharves, with a maximum quayside depth of 15 m (49 ft), so large ships can berth. The port covers about 41 hectares. The page lists one call this autumn: Costa Serena on 25 October 2026, arriving at 08:00 and departing at 17:00. Secondary summaries name different wharves, including the Alava Wharf, the Rivera Wharf and the Subic Bay International Terminal. These were not confirmed on the pages read, so check the berth in the cruise documents before going ashore.

## Into town and transport

The CruiseMapper page says shopping malls, premium hotels, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and casinos are a few minutes' walk from the passenger terminal. Subic Bay International Airport lies to the south and handles domestic flights run by Air Juan to Manila, Caticlan on Boracay, Puerto Galera and Busuanga Bay. Victory Liner buses from Metro Manila run along the Olongapo-Bugallon Road and pass through Olongapo, where passengers can change to jeepneys or passenger vans. Within the town, tricycles are the main public transport, according to Wikivoyage.

## Sights

The CruiseMapper page lists Dungaree Beach, a golf course, a yacht marina, a maritime museum, shipwreck and coral reef diving, theme parks and Zoobic Park. The Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center is one of the country's largest public event venues. The Pamulaklakin Forest trail crosses rainforest to a traditional Aeta village. Wikivoyage describes Cinco Picos, a five-peaked massif 881 m high that the Aeta consider sacred, and the Pinaglabanan River, reached on foot from Sitio Cawag. The guide describes the river as pristine freshwater.

## Food & shopping

Wikivoyage lists four places to buy food and everyday goods: the New Subic Public Market on Subic Fishing Port Road, Savemore Market and Puregold on the Olongapo-Bugallon Road, and WalterMart at Mangan-Vaca, listed with hours of 9 AM to 8 PM. Puregold is at Ilwas and Savemore at Baraca-Camachile, both on the Olongapo-Bugallon Road. The guide has no restaurant listings, while the CruiseMapper page names restaurants and bars a few minutes from the terminal. Shopping malls also sit close to the terminal, so it is possible to eat and shop without leaving the Freeport Zone.

## Money & connectivity

The sources read give no currency, exchange or card acceptance details, and no mobile or internet coverage information. The Philippine peso is the local currency. Postal codes are 2209 for the town and 2222 within the Subic Bay Freeport. Wikivoyage says Subic is quieter and has cheaper accommodation than Olongapo, where most of the activity is. Tricycle fares and small-shop prices are not given in the sources read, so ask locally before boarding. The guide has no details on ATMs, so check cash arrangements in advance.

## History of the base

The Subic area began as a Spanish shipbuilding facility in 1885. It later became a major US naval base, which closed in 1991. Ash from Mount Pinatubo damaged base facilities as the US forces left. The former base was then converted to mixed industrial, commercial and tourist use. Today the former base area is the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Wikivoyage notes that Hanjin Shipyard is another large site in the area. The guide describes Subic as a municipality in Zambales that shares the bay with the busier city of Olongapo.

## Practical tips

Wikivoyage warns that the area is mountainous, so landslides and flash floods are common in the rainy season. Aeta communities in the highlands keep their precolonial customs, and visitors should show respect for them. The guide says the Aeta know the local terrain best, which is a reason to use local guides on the trails. The main road routes run north to Iba, via Castillejos, and south to Olongapo. The guide says the rainy season brings landslides and flash floods, so check the forecast before a trek.

## Where to stay

Wikivoyage lists three hotels in the Subic area. White Rock Beach Resort is on Mojica Street in Matain. Balai Subik Hotel is on the Olongapo-Bugallon Road in Mangan-Vaca, beside Saint Therese Church. JNV Dream Hotel is in Calapacuan on the same road. The guide gives phone numbers and an email address for these, though one listed number is missing its country code, so check contact details before calling. The guide says accommodation in Subic is cheaper and quieter than in Olongapo, and it does not list room prices.

## The port

The port is a natural harbour inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, on the South China Sea. It is on Luzon's western coast, in Zambales Province, about 100 km north-west of Manila Bay. Its maximum berth depth is 15 m (49 ft), and it can handle many vessel types, including some of the world's largest cargo and passenger ships. The CruiseMapper page gives the port code as PHSFS and lists its calendar for 2026 to 2028, with only one call shown when the page was read.

## Accessibility & mobility

The sources read do not cover accessibility at the terminal or on the tricycle and van routes. Check with the cruise line about the shore arrangements if step-free access is needed.
