Vardø is the easternmost town in Norway, and it keeps the same time zone as the rest of the country, so the sun rises and sets very late in the east. Weather is cold and windy, and shops close early.

## The town

Vardø is a small fishing town on Vardøya island. Its wooden houses and the harbour are the main sights.

## Vardøhus Fortress

[Vardøhus Fortress](https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Vard%C3%B8) is a medieval fortress on the island, which was rebuilt over the centuries. The site has a museum, and the views over the Barents Sea are the highlight.

## Steilneset Memorial

The Steilneset Memorial is an art installation by Louise Bourgeois and Peter Zumthor, commemorating the victims of the witch trials of the 17th century. It is a moving visit.
