Getting ashore
The dock is within walking distance of the town. Check your ship’s notice for the berth.
Watch-outs
Vardø is the easternmost town in Norway, and it keeps the same time zone as the rest of the country, so the sun rises and sets very late in the east. Weather is cold and windy, and shops close early.
The town
Vardø is a small fishing town on Vardøya island. Its wooden houses and the harbour are the main sights.
Vardøhus Fortress
Vardøhus Fortress is a medieval fortress on the island, which was rebuilt over the centuries. The site has a museum, and the views over the Barents Sea are the highlight.
Steilneset Memorial
The Steilneset Memorial is an art installation by Louise Bourgeois and Peter Zumthor, commemorating the victims of the witch trials of the 17th century. It is a moving visit.
Food & shopping
Seafood, including king crab and cod, is the main local food. Cafés near the harbour are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards are accepted in most places. Mobile signal is good in town.
Accessibility & mobility
The dock and the town are flat. The fortress and the memorial are reached by short walks, with some steps. Ask your operator for accessible transport.
