## Getting ashore

The dock is about 500 metres from the town centre, and shuttle buses are available. Check your ship's notice for the berth and the shuttle times.

## Watch-outs

Narvik is in the far north, and the weather can be cold even in summer. The town is compact, so the walk is short, but the hills around it are steep.

## The town

Narvik was the first industrial town in northern Norway and gained town status in 1902, when the Ofoten railway was completed. Its culture reflects Swedish navvies, British engineers and sailors from around the world.

## Ofoten railway and the iron ore line

The Ofoten railway runs east to the Swedish border, and the line carries iron ore from Kiruna. A railway trip gives views of the mountains and fjords.

## War history

Narvik was the scene of heavy fighting in 1940, and the war museum and the memorials on the hills tell the story. Allow time for a visit to the battle sites.

## Narvikfjellet

The mountain above the town is reached by cable car, with views over the fjord and the Lofoten. The top is a popular spot for a walk.

## Food & shopping

Seafood, reindeer and cloudberry desserts are the local specialities. The town centre has cafés and restaurants close to the dock.

The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is good in the town.

The dock and the town centre are mostly flat. The cable car has level access at the station. Hill walks and battle sites are steep and uneven. Ask your operator for accessible transport.
