Getting ashore
Flåm is a small village at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. Ships berth at the quay, and the village and the railway station are a short walk.
Watch-outs
Flåm is very busy when several ships call. The railway is booked up in peak season, so reserve your place. Weather in the valley can change quickly.
Flåm Railway
The Flåm Railway climbs 866 metres through tunnels and waterfalls to Myrdal. It is one of the most scenic railway rides in the world, with a stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall.
Aurlandsfjord and Sognefjord
Boat trips run along the fjord, and the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO site, is a narrow arm of the Sognefjord reached by boat.
Myrdal and the mountains
Myrdal is the junction for the Bergen line. Walks and hikes cover the mountain valleys in summer.
Food & shopping
Norwegian food includes cured salmon, lamb and cloudberry desserts. The village has cafés and a few souvenir shops.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is limited in the valley.
Accessibility & mobility
The quay and the village are mostly flat. The railway has level boarding at the stations, and the Kjosfossen platform involves steps. Ask your operator for accessible transport.
