Getting ashore
Ships dock in the centre of town, with views of the fjord and the mountains on all sides. The village is small, and most of the sights are reached by road.
Watch-outs
The mountain roads are steep and can close in winter or bad weather. Check the road status before any trip. Weather in the valley can change quickly.
The valley and the fjord
The valley and surrounding mountains and fjords are among the most dramatic in Norway. The Romsdal valley is the setting for many hiking routes.
Trollstigen
Trollstigen is a steep mountain road with hairpin bends and waterfalls, with a viewpoint over the valley. It is a popular day trip, and it is open in season.
Geiranger and the fjords
Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is reached by road and is one of the most visited fjords. The drive is long, so a tour is the easiest option.
Food & shopping
Norwegian food includes fish and mountain produce, with cafés and restaurants in the town centre. Shops close early on Sundays.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is good in town.
Accessibility & mobility
The quay and the town centre are flat. Mountain roads and viewpoints involve steep slopes and steps. Ask your operator for coach access and rest stops.
