Getting ashore
Ships dock at the Bukta pier, next to the airport. The town centre is about 4 km away. A shuttle is usually provided, and taxis are generally available at the pier.
Watch-outs
Alta is in the Arctic, and winter is very cold. Summer nights are light, which can disrupt sleep. Bring warm clothing and a waterproof, as the weather changes quickly.
Alta Museum and the rock carvings
The Alta Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Stone Age rock carvings of Hjemmeluft. The museum and the carvings show thousands of years of human history in the fjord.
The fjord
The town sits at the head of the Alta Fjord, with views over the water and the mountains. Boat trips run in summer, and the fjord is known for its wildlife.
Northern lights
Alta is one of the best places in Norway to see the northern lights in winter, with tours and observatories in the area.
Food & shopping
Seafood, reindeer and Sámi food are the main local dishes. Cafés and restaurants in the town centre are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Norwegian krone. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is good in town.
Accessibility & mobility
The pier and the shuttle are accessible. The museum is largely level, but the rock carvings involve a rough path and steps. Ask your operator about accessible vehicles.
