Getting ashore
The ship docks at Waitohi Wharf, about half a mile from the centre of Picton. A kiosk of the Picton Information Office is on the wharf, and a free shuttle runs from the wharf to the town.
Watch-outs
Picton is a small town and quiet on Sundays. Weather in the Marlborough Sounds can change quickly. Book boat trips and wine tours in advance.
Picton
The town is set on a harbour at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound. The waterfront has cafés, shops and the Edwin Fox ship, one of the oldest surviving ships built for the emigrant trade.
Marlborough Sounds
The sounds are a maze of waterways and forested hills. Water taxis and boat cruises run from Picton, and the Queen Charlotte Track is a multi-day walk through the bush.
Blenheim and the wine region
Blenheim, the wine centre, is about 30 minutes away. Sauvignon Blanc from the region is well known, and cellar door visits are popular.
Food & shopping
New Zealand food includes green-lipped mussels, lamb and fresh seafood. Cafés on the waterfront are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the New Zealand dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is patchy in the sounds.
Accessibility & mobility
The wharf and the shuttle are accessible, and the waterfront is flat. Boat trips involve gangways. Ask your operator about accessible transport and vineyard access.
