It sits on Halfmoon Bay on the east coast and takes its name from Oban in Scotland. The CruiseMapper wiki says cruise ships dock or anchor at Oban, but it does not describe the berths, the tender operation or the wharf, so ask your cruise line whether your call is at the wharf or at anchor, and whether passengers are tendered ashore. The CruiseMapper port page lists one call, the Silver Moon from Silversea Cruises, arriving on Friday 11 December 2026 at 08:00 and leaving at 18:00. That date is after the review date of 19 October 2026, and the page is a snapshot, so check the ship's itinerary. The island is reached by air to Invercargill and by ferry to Bluff, which may matter for timing."],["For walkers and architecture fans","Wikivoyage says the village is compact and that visitors should walk, mostly. The main businesses line Elgin Terrace, Main Road and Ayr Street. Ackers Cottage, at 87 Leask Bay Road, is the island's oldest building, dating from 1836. The Rakiura Museum at 11 Main Road costs 10 dollars. It opens daily from 10 AM to 3 PM from October to May, and from June to September it opens Monday to Friday from 10 AM to noon, Saturday from 10 AM to 1:30 PM and Sunday from noon to 2 PM. Wikivoyage updated the museum hours in 2021, so check them before you go. A Local's Tail, a 40-minute show at the Bunkhouse Theatre on Main Road, costs 10 dollars, with shows at 11 AM, 2 PM and 4 PM."],["Walking guide: the village","Start at the wharf and walk up Elgin Terrace. The Oban Visitor Centre is in The Red Shed at 12 Elgin Terrace, near the wharf. Observation Rock, across from the rugby field, is a short walk up from town and gives a view over the southern bays. The Fuchsia Walk is a few minutes' stroll, according to Wikivoyage. The Moturau Moana Native Gardens overlook Halfmoon Bay. The sources give no total walking time, but the village is described as compact. Return to the wharf the way you came, and allow time before your ship's departure."],["For nature and outdoor fans","The Ulva Island ferry leaves Golden Bay at 9 AM, noon and 2 PM, weather permitting, and does not run in winter. A round trip costs 25 dollars cash or 27 dollars by card, and you keep the leaf ticket for the return. Ulva's guided walks cost 125 dollars, with departures at 8:30 AM and 1 PM from October to April, and at 9:30 AM from May to September. Kiwi-spotting tours start from about 100 dollars a person, and kiwi are mostly seen after dark. These prices are from listings dated 2022 to 2024, so check them before you book. The Te Puka chain sculpture at Lee Bay marks the start of the Rakiura Track, a 32 km loop that follows the coast for much of its length, with medium difficulty and a chance to see wild southern brown kiwi. Huts and campsites on the track must be booked in Oban. Wikivoyage lists the M\u0101ori Beach Sawmill as a 4 to 5 hour return walk."],["For eaters and drinkers","The South Sea Hotel on Elgin Terrace serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains cost 10 to 40 dollars, and booking is advised in summer, especially on quiz night, Sunday from 6:30 PM. Church Hill Restaurant and Oyster Bar, at 36 Kamahi Road, serves local Southern Glory oysters, a good choice for a seafood lunch. Expect a busier room on quiz night, when booking is advised. Kai Kart on Ayr Street sells fish and chips, open Wednesday to Sunday in season, so check the day before you plan a visit."],["For shoppers","The Four Square on Elgin Terrace sells snacks from 2 to 10 dollars and groceries, so stock up before a walk or the track. Souvenirs are sold by Glowing Sky, Stewart Island Experience, and the DOC and Stewart Island Flights shops. Some businesses are cash only, including Allan's Base Camp, and the Ulva ferry charges less for cash than for card. Buy camping supplies in town, and carry your own toilet paper and cooking equipment if you plan to walk the track. Prices in this guide are in New Zealand dollars."],["Getting around and money","Aurora Cab Company, on +64 277 227 935, runs daily from 7 AM to 9 PM and takes Eftpos, according to a listing updated in December 2024. Shuttles, rental cars, mountain bikes and scooters are also available, and electric bikes can be hired at 4 Main Road from 55 dollars for 3.5 hours, a 2020 listing.
