## Getting ashore

Ships dock at Lyttelton Inner Harbour. Lyttelton's town centre is within walking distance of the port, but passengers are not allowed to walk out of the port area on their own. The port authority runs a shuttle between the passenger terminal and the town.

## Watch-outs

Lyttelton is a small working port, and the security rules are strict, so follow the marshals and the shuttle. Christchurch is about 20 minutes away by road and is the main city. Weather in Canterbury changes quickly, so bring layers.

## Lyttelton village

The village sits in an old volcanic crater, with colourful cafés, galleries and craft shops. It is a relaxed place to spend an hour or two. The Lyttelton Museum covers the port and the town's history.

## Christchurch

The city is rebuilding after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The Cardboard Cathedral, the Re:Start Mall and the Botanic Gardens are the main sights. The tram runs through the central city, and the Christchurch Art Gallery is a good visit.

## Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula

Akaroa is a French-influenced harbour town on the Banks Peninsula, about 75 minutes from Christchurch by road. Its harbour cruises watch for Hector's dolphins. Tours from the port are the simplest way to visit.

## Food & shopping

Canterbury produces lamb, cheese and wine, and these appear on menus across the region. Cafés in Lyttelton and the central city are good for lunch. Shops in Christchurch are open daily.

## Money & connectivity

The currency is the New Zealand dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. ATMs are in the town centre.

## Accessibility & mobility

The port shuttle is accessible. Lyttelton's village has hills and cobbled areas, and the walk up to the old crater can be steep. The Christchurch central city is mostly flat. Ask your tour operator about accessible vehicles for Akaroa and the peninsula.
