Getting ashore

The Bay of Islands has no dock for cruise ships, so they anchor in the bay, just off Russell. Most tender passengers to Paihia, a pleasant 25-minute walk along the beach. Check what your ship has arranged, as the tender point varies.

Watch-outs

Tender landings depend on the weather and the wind. The sun is strong on the water. Bring water and check the return times before you leave.

Russell and Paihia

Russell is the oldest European settlement in New Zealand, with colonial buildings and the Christ Church. Paihia is the main tourist town, with shops, cafés and boat tours.

Waitangi

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The grounds have a museum and the Māori meeting house. A visit is a key part of New Zealand history.

Islands and the Cape Brett

Boat trips visit the islands and the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett. Dolphin swims are popular in season. Tours are weather-dependent.

Food & shopping

Local food includes seafood, kiwifruit and Northland produce. Cafés and restaurants in Paihia and Russell are the easiest choice.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the New Zealand dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Mobile signal is good in town and patchy on the islands.

Accessibility & mobility

The tender landing and the beach walk can be hard for anyone with limited mobility. Russell has uneven pavements. Ask your operator about tender assistance and accessible boats.
