Getting ashore
Ships call at Lifou, one of the Loyalty Islands, and passengers land by tender or at a pier, depending on the ship. Check your ship’s notice for the landing point. Taxis and shuttles run from the landing.
Watch-outs
Lifou is a Kanak island with strong customs. Dress modestly in villages, ask before taking photographs, and respect the local rules. Shops are few and close early.
Wé and the island
Wé is the main village, with a market and small shops. The island is limestone, with caves and cliffs along the coast.
Jokin Cathedral
The Jokin Cathedral is a Catholic church on the island, with a striking design. Its interior and the view from the surrounding area are worth a visit.
Easo beach and the coast
Easo beach is a long sandy bay with clear water and a reef. The Mu Orö caves and the coastal cliffs are popular stops on the island tour.
Food & shopping
Kanak food includes taro, fish and coconut. Local craft stalls sell carvings and woven goods, and buying from them supports the community.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the CFP franc. Cash is needed on the island. Mobile signal is limited.
Accessibility & mobility
The landing and the village are flat, but the caves and the cliffs involve steps and uneven paths. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
