## Getting ashore

[Willemstad](https://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/willemstad-curacao-port-31) is Curaçao's capital, with cruise berths on the Otrobanda side of St Anna Bay. The main locations are the Mega Cruise Terminal and Mathey Wharf. These are different pickup points; Rif Fort is a nearby landmark and shopping area, not the name to substitute for your actual berth. Read the ship's notice, check the [port authority's terminal information](https://curports.com/cruise/cruise-terminals/) and save the correct return gate before leaving.

## A rewarding first walk

From the Mega Pier area, follow the pedestrian route towards Rif Fort and the harbour. Cross the Queen Emma pontoon bridge towards Punda for views of the colourful Handelskade waterfront, then explore the central shopping streets. Otrobanda, on the cruise-port side, has its own historic lanes, murals and restored buildings. Allow roughly two to three hours for a relaxed central walk with a drink or lunch stop, excluding museum visits and the route from your particular berth.

## The bridge can interrupt your route

Queen Emma Bridge swings open to let vessels pass. Follow staff instructions and do not try to hurry across once access is closed. Official tourism guidance describes a free pedestrian ferry when the bridge is open. Save the ferry landing and allow time for the crossing or the bridge to return. On the way back, reaching the Punda waterfront is not the same as reaching your ship on the opposite side of the bay.

## History beyond the waterfront

The [Kurá Hulanda Museum](https://kurahulandamuseum.com/plan-your-visit/) in Otrobanda explores African heritage, the transatlantic slave trade and Caribbean culture. Allow about 60-90 minutes or longer if you take a guide. Its current visitor page lists international adult admission at US$12, with an optional guided tour charged separately. Ordinary visits do not require pre-booking, but groups and special arrangements should contact the museum. Check the current price and last entry before going. The museum accepts most major cards except American Express; cash must be the exact amount because it cannot give change.

## Beach or island excursion

Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel are separate road outings; western beaches such as Cas Abao need a longer transfer. Choose one main beach and arrange the return before settling in. Ask whether a package includes admission, loungers, shade, equipment and food, rather than assuming the transfer covers everything. For a snorkelling trip, confirm swimming requirements, sea conditions, boarding and where you will meet the boat. A town day is a useful alternative if an excursion is cancelled or your call is short.

## Money: Caribbean guilders

The local currency is the Caribbean guilder, code XCG and symbol Cg. It replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder in 2025; old ANG notes stopped being legal tender after 30 June 2025. The [central bank](https://www.centralbank.cw/index.php/functions/banknotes-coins/caribbean-guilder) maintains the peg at US$1 = Cg1.79. US dollars are widely accepted, but ask which currency a price uses and how change will be given. Card and merchant conversion rates or fees can differ from the official peg. Do not plan spending around the old ANG code.

## Taxis, lunch and the return

Both principal terminals have taxi stands. Agree the total fare, currency, number of passengers, waiting and return pickup before leaving; avoid relying on an old fixed beach-transfer price. A local lunch or café stop gives a break from the heat. Check the menu and any service charge. Take water, sun protection and comfortable shoes, and keep your map and booking saved offline. Leave time for bridge or ferry delays, the full walk to your berth and port security before all-aboard.

## Accessibility & mobility

Confirm gangway arrangements and the full route from your berth. The pontoon bridge can move, and older streets have kerbs, uneven paving and narrow sections. Ask about suitable transport rather than assuming a conventional taxi can carry an occupied wheelchair. Kurá Hulanda says wheelchair access uses a service entrance and some exhibition thresholds need assistance; contact it before visiting. Beach sand and boat boarding require separate checks.
