## Getting ashore

Ocean ships normally use the Cruise Terminal at Wilhelminakade 699, on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas beside the Erasmus Bridge. This is the former Holland America Line departure pier: the terminal building is a protected monument. The port lists tourist information, taxis and free Wi-Fi. River ships use several other quays, including Boompjeskade and Oosterkade. Check your ship's actual berth before setting out; the directions below start at the ocean terminal.

## Walking or taking the metro

Allow roughly 15-20 minutes from the terminal to the north end of the Erasmus Bridge, and 35-45 minutes to the Markthal, depending on the berth exit and your pace. These are planning estimates, without sightseeing stops. Wilhelminaplein metro station is a short walk from the pier. Lines D and E run north through Leuvehaven and Beurs to Rotterdam Centraal. For the Markthal, change at Beurs to an eastbound A, B or C service for Blaak, or walk from Beurs. Use the [RET journey planner](https://www.ret.nl/) to check works and your return route.

## A manageable first visit

With three or four hours ashore, cross the Erasmus Bridge, follow the waterfront and walk into the centre for the Markthal, Cube Houses and Oude Haven. The market hall's painted ceiling, the tilted yellow houses and the old harbour are close together. Have lunch here, then return by metro if your feet have had enough. Allow time for the walk from Wilhelminaplein back to the gangway. Looking at the architecture from the street costs nothing; entering the [Kijk-Kubus museum house](https://kubuswoning.nl/en/visit.html) is a separate paid visit with stairs.

## A harbour trip with less walking

[Spido's Rotterdam Highlights & Harbour Tour](https://www.spido.nl/en/cruises/rotterdam-highlights-harbour-tour) lasts 75 minutes and leaves from Willemsplein 85, across the Erasmus Bridge from the ocean terminal. It combines the city waterfront with part of the working port. The adult fare displayed when checked in October 2026 was €18.75; confirm the price and sailing time before booking. Departures are less frequent in winter. Allow about two hours at the departure point for boarding and the trip, plus your walks there and back. Spido accepts cards rather than cash.

## Art and migration history

[Fenix](https://www.fenix.nl/en/plan-your-visit/) , across the pedestrian Rijnhaven Bridge from Hotel New York, uses art and personal stories to explore migration in a former harbour warehouse. It is a convenient option near the ocean terminal; allow about two hours for a visit. For art and the way a museum looks after its collection, consider [Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen](https://www.boijmans.nl/en/Plan%20your%20visit) in Museumpark. The main Boijmans museum is closed for renovation. The Depot is a separate, ticketed visit, normally Tuesday-Sunday, with a booked starting time. Its listed standard admission was €20 in October 2026, with some exhibition supplements. Choose one museum rather than adding both to a short stop.

## Kinderdijk windmills

Kinderdijk's 19 windmills show how this low-lying landscape has been kept dry. The direct [WaterShuttle](https://kinderdijk.nl/en/watershuttle/) takes about 30 minutes from Rotterdam; check its current departure quay and both sailings before paying. This is a tourist service with its own ticket, not an ordinary public-transport Waterbus journey. A combined return-boat and admission ticket is available from Kinderdijk. The site suggests about three hours for its mills and visitor attractions. Treat this as a half-day outing, allowing roughly five hours from the ship including walking, waiting and a return margin. In a short call, stay in Rotterdam.

## Tickets, lunch and practicalities

For local buses, trams and metro, OVpay accepts supported contactless bank cards or phones. Each traveller needs a separate payment method; check in and out using exactly the same card or device. Take a card out of your wallet before tapping. The city visitor service lists a 2026 RET day ticket at €12; compare that with the journeys you expect to make rather than buying one automatically. The Markthal is a convenient covered lunch stop, with individual traders setting their own prices. Carry a rain layer: the riverfront and bridge are exposed. Stay out of marked cycle lanes when stopping for a photograph.

## Before returning to the ship

Save the [official city map](https://www.rotterdam.info/en/visit/good-to-know/city-map) , your tickets and the ship's berth address while you have a connection. Museums may close on Mondays, with exceptions on holidays; check the date you are visiting. A trip to Amsterdam adds station transfers and a substantial train journey in each direction. For a first Rotterdam call, the city or Kinderdijk leaves more time ashore and fewer transport connections. Work back from the ship's all-aboard time, leaving a margin for disruption rather than relying on the last possible service.

## Accessibility & mobility

The waterfront is largely level, but the Erasmus Bridge has an incline and can be windy. Distances across the city add up. RET's metro stations have lifts or ramps; check lift outages before relying on a step-free journey. The small Kijk-Kubus has stairs. The Depot has lifts to each floor. Fenix publishes detailed access information and offers a free companion ticket to visitors who cannot visit independently. Spido lists its 75-minute tour as wheelchair accessible; contact the operator about your chair and boarding arrangements. Ask the ship separately about the gangway and any assistance from your berth.
