Getting ashore
Cruise ships use the new terminal at Port St. Maarten. It can take up to seven ships. You step off near a few shops. A water taxi runs from the terminal to the beach promenade for about US$4 one way. The walk into town is about 10 minutes. Note which pier is yours.
Watch-outs
The first taxis may be for longer tours. Walk further for a short ride into town. Agree the fare before you leave. The water taxi is separate from land taxis. The sun can be strong on the walk. Do not miss the last water taxi back if you use it.
Getting into Philipsburg
Town is about a 10-minute walk from the terminal. Follow the signs or the waterfront to the main streets. The path is flat and paved. Water taxis drop you at different spots on the promenade. Land taxis are available if you prefer not to walk. A printable map is at the tourist booth.
Taxis & ride apps
Land taxis into town are about US$3 one way. Water taxis are about US$5 one way or US$7 for the day, kids free. Confirm the price at the booth. Ride apps are limited. Name the cruise terminal for the return. The rank is outside the terminal.
What to do nearby
Walk the three main streets for shops and cafes. Great Bay Beach is along the waterfront. The architecture shows Dutch heritage. This area is easy on foot and needs no ticket. You can see the promenade without a tour.
Going further
Maho Beach for plane spotting is about a 20-minute taxi ride, about US$20 one way. The French side at Marigot is reachable by minibus. These take time. Book if you want a guided trip. Stay near town if the ship schedule is tight.
Food & shopping
Downtown has shops for jewelry, duty-free goods, and local items. Cafes line the streets. Carry small bills. Ask the price if no menu is posted. The terminal has a few shops if you stay near the ship.
Opening times & connectivity
Shops open about 9 to 5. English and Dutch are spoken. WiFi is available in some cafes. Save a map of the terminal offline. Ask staff for the emergency number.
Accessibility & mobility
The port's walk of about 15 minutes is in the open and may not be step-free the whole way. A water taxi may not take a wheelchair. Book a taxi that can before you commit to the beach or the French side, and ask the ship about the gangway.
