Getting ashore

Ships dock at the cruise terminal on the edge of Oranjestad. You walk off the pier into the terminal building with shops, restrooms and a tourist desk. Downtown starts just outside the gates. No shuttle is needed for the town.

Watch-outs

Taxi fares are fixed by the government and rose in May 2026. Confirm the price for your group at the stand or on taxi.aw. No meters. The free trolley runs only 10 am to 5 pm. Beaches have little natural shade; bring water and sun cover. The walk into town is flat but can be hot.

Getting into Oranjestad

The main shopping streets are a 5–10 minute walk from the terminal. A free hydrogen trolley loops through downtown from about 10 am to 5 pm, stopping near the terminal. Local Arubus buses leave from the terminal a short walk away and go up the hotel strip. Tickets are about $2.60 one way.

Taxis & ride apps

Taxis queue outside the terminal. Official fare to Eagle Beach is about US$28 for up to four people one way. Palm Beach is about US$33. No Uber. Agree the fare before you leave. A $5 surcharge applies on Sundays and late nights. Waiting time is about $1 a minute. Name the cruise terminal for the return.

What to do nearby

Walk the Dutch colonial streets and shop along the main road. The free trolley covers the downtown loop. Fort Zoutman and the museum are a short walk. For a beach, take a taxi or bus to Eagle Beach (quieter) or Palm Beach (more hotels and shops). Both are 15–20 minutes away.

Going further

California Lighthouse and the north end beaches need a longer taxi or tour. The Aloe Factory and Butterfly Farm are reachable by taxi. A half-day taxi hire is about $60 an hour with a two-hour minimum. Arrange the return so you have time before the ship sails.

Food & shopping

Renaissance Marketplace is next to the port with restaurants and shops. Downtown has more cafés and duty-free stores. Beach bars at Eagle or Palm Beach serve lunch. US dollars and cards work widely. Aruban florin is the local currency but rarely needed.

Opening times & connectivity

Main-street shops open about 8 or 9 until 6, Monday to Saturday. Malls start later. Many open on Sundays when ships are in. Free Wi-Fi at the terminal and in the marketplace. Languages include English, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamento. Emergency number is 911.

Accessibility & mobility

The terminal and downtown streets are mostly flat. Some sidewalks are narrow. Beach access depends on the taxi drop-off. Ask the ship about the gangway. Name the cruise terminal for the return ride.
