Getting ashore
Ships dock at Walvis Bay harbour, about a mile from the town centre. Metered taxis wait at the pier, and shuttles drop passengers near the town. Walking through the port is discouraged, because of the work activity.
Watch-outs
The coast is cold and windy, and the desert sun is strong. Carry water, sun cover and a warm layer. Keep away from the port’s working areas.
Lagoon and flamingos
The lagoon is a major wetland with flamingos and pelicans, and the boardwalk is a pleasant walk. Boat trips visit the lagoon and the seal colonies.
Dune 7 and the desert
Dune 7 is one of the tallest dunes near Walvis Bay, a short drive away. Sandboarding and quad tours run from the town.
Swakopmund and Sossusvlei
Swakopmund, a German-influenced seaside town, is about 30 minutes away. Sossusvlei and the great dunes are a long day trip by road or by air.
Food & shopping
Namibian food includes fresh oysters, seafood platters and game meats. The town has supermarkets and small craft shops.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Namibian dollar, which is at parity with the South African rand. Cards are accepted in larger places, and ATMs are in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
The pier and the town are flat. Dunes and sand are hard for anyone with limited mobility. Boat trips involve steps. Ask your operator for vehicles with step access.
