Getting ashore

Watch-outs

The port is a long way from the main sights, and the heat is intense. Buy shuttle tickets inside the terminal before you leave.

Tapachula

Tapachula is the nearest town, with a central park, markets and churches. Shuttles run from the terminal, and the ticket is about $10 return.

Coffee and the highlands

The Chiapas highlands grow coffee and cocoa. Farm tours visit the plantations in the hills.

Coast and beaches

The Chiapas coast has beaches and lagoons, reached by road from the port area.

Food & shopping

Chiapas food includes tamales, mole and fresh seafood. Markets sell coffee, chocolate and crafts.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the Mexican peso. US dollars are accepted in some places, and cash is needed for small purchases.

Accessibility & mobility

The terminal is level, but the port and the town have uneven pavements. Farm tours involve rough roads. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
