Getting ashore
Ships call at Malacca, a historic port on the Strait. Passengers land at the port or by tender, depending on the ship, and taxis wait at the port.
Watch-outs
Malacca is hot and humid, and the old town is busy at weekends. Agree taxi fares before you travel, or use the meter.
Old Malacca
The UNESCO old town has the Dutch Square with its red buildings, the Christ Church, the St Paul’s Hill ruins and the Portuguese quarter.
Jonker Street
Jonker Street is the night market street, busy in the evening with food and crafts.
River and trishaw rides
Boat trips along the Malacca River pass the colourful murals. Trishaws are a traditional way to see the town.
Food & shopping
Peranakan food includes laksa, nyonya kueh and chicken rice balls. Hawker stalls and the night market are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the ringgit. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
The old town is flat in parts, but the hill up to St Paul's has steps. Trishaws have low seats. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
