Getting ashore
Ships berth at the Kota Kinabalu port terminal, a short taxi ride from the centre. Taxis wait at the terminal.
Watch-outs
Taxi drivers may quote high fares, so agree before you go. Sun and humidity are strong. Dress modestly away from the resorts.
Waterfront and markets
The waterfront has the Filipino Market, the Atkinson Clock Tower and seafood restaurants. The night market is lively in the evening.
Sapi Island and the islands
Boat trips from the jetty visit Sapi, Manukan and Mamutik islands for snorkelling and beaches, in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.
Mount Kinabalu
Mount Kinabalu National Park is about two hours away, the highest mountain in Malaysia, with trails, hot springs and orchids.
Food & shopping
Sabahan food includes hinava, tuaran mee and fresh seafood. Markets sell fruit, spices and crafts.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the ringgit. Cards are accepted in larger places, and ATMs are in the town.
Accessibility & mobility
The port and waterfront are flat. Mount Kinabalu trails are steep and rough. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
