Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Aqaba cruise terminal, which is a restricted port area. Transfers take passengers to the town and the sights.

Watch-outs

Aqaba is the Red Sea gateway for trips to Wadi Rum and Petra. Those are long days, so book a tour with a set return time. Dress modestly, and check the current entry rules.

Aqaba

Aqaba is a small resort port with a waterfront, the Aqaba Fort and the Maritime Museum. The Red Sea reefs are good for snorkelling.

Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a desert valley of sandstone monoliths, reached by road in about an hour. Jeep tours and camel rides are popular, with overnight desert camps.

Petra

Petra is the rock-cut city of the Nabataeans, about two hours away by road. It is a full day, and the climb to the Monastery is steep.

Food & shopping

Jordanian food includes mansaf, falafel and fresh seafood. The Aqaba markets sell spices and textiles.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the Jordanian dinar. Cards are accepted in larger places, and ATMs are in the town.

Accessibility & mobility

The terminal is flat, but Petra and Wadi Rum involve uneven ground and steep paths. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles, and check access for the sites.
