## Getting ashore

A February 2024 report says the dock is within walking distance of town, so confirm the walk on the day before you plan one. The dock's coordinates are 34.474 N, 136.848 E. Toba is on the Shima Peninsula, facing Ise Bay, and its port code is JPTOB. The port city has about 20,000 residents, and most of its land lies within Ise-Shima National Park. The pier and berth are not named, so check the ship's notice for the terminal and the walk. The Isewan Ferry terminal is at Toba 3-chome 1484-111, but it is not known to be linked to the cruise berth. The Isewan Ferry runs between Toba and Irago in Aichi Prefecture, but its details date from December 2015 and give no fares or timetables, so check before you plan.

## For walkers and architecture fans

Mikimoto Pearl Island is a five-minute walk from Toba Station and is the main attraction for a day in port. It is open from 09:00 to 17:00, with an admission of 1,650 yen and English guidance. Kokichi Mikimoto created the first cultured pearl there in 1893, and ama divers give demonstrations. Toba Castle ruins are also listed. Ise Jingu is about 1.5 hours from Nagoya by Kintetsu train and is the centre of sightseeing around Ise. It has 125 shrines, including Geku and Naiku, and Geku is visited first, as a custom from ancient times. Futami's Meotoiwa rocks are a landmark.

## For nature and outdoor fans

The Toba Aquarium is the other main sight. Adult admission is 2,400 yen and child admission 1,200 yen, and it is one of four aquariums with dugongs. It has about 25,000 animals and about 1,000 marine species. Toshijima, Sugashima and Kamishima are reached by ferry, and Sugashima has short hikes with views over Toba Bay.

## For shoppers

Oharai Dori, the 800 m street in the old town of Oharai-machi in Ise, is lined with souvenir shops and well-established confectioners. Shops and department stores are generally open daily, including national holidays except New Year's, from about 10:00 or 10:30 to 19:30 or 20:00.

## For eaters and drinkers

Named restaurants and shops in Toba itself are not known, so the best food options are around Ise. Along Oharai Dori there are restaurants and inns as well as shops. Cafés with free Wi-Fi are spreading across the country. The local tourist association runs a Japanese-only guide site and a separate English-language one, which have different content, so check the English site for current food options.

## Getting around and money

Toba Station is the end of the Kintetsu Toba and Shima lines and the JR Sangu Line. From Osaka a limited express takes about 2 hours. From Nagoya a Kintetsu limited express takes 1 hour 35 minutes, or the JR Central Rapid Service Mie takes 1 hour 50 minutes. Mie Kotsu's CAN Bus gives unlimited rides around Ise, Futami and Toba, with a one-day adult pass at 1,000 yen and child pass at 500 yen, or a two-day pass at 1,600 yen and 800 yen. Ask the driver for the fare before you start. Do not tip taxi drivers, since the service is included, and do not open the rear left door, as the driver opens and closes it. For less well-known places, show a written address or a map, as the Japanese address system can confuse drivers. The currency is the yen. ATMs can usually take overseas accounts, and post offices have ATMs. Major credit cards are taken at most shops and restaurants in large cities, but rural areas are cash-based and some shops refuse cards.

## Accessibility & mobility

The sources read do not describe step-free routes from the berth or access at the aquarium and pearl island. Check the walk from the berth with the ship, and ask the attractions directly about step-free access before you plan the visit.
