Getting ashore
The archive extract, captured in February 2024, says the dock is within walking distance of town. The CruiseMapper wiki places Toba on the Shima Peninsula, facing Ise Bay, and gives the port code as JPTOB. The sources read do not name the pier or berth, so check the ship’s notice for the terminal and the walk. The archive’s coordinates place the dock at 34.474 north, 136.848 east. Because the archive is dated, confirm the walking distance on the day before you plan a walk. Wikivoyage gives the Isewan Ferry terminal address as Toba 3-chome 1484-111. The sources do not link that terminal to the cruise berth.
Terminal and berths
The sources read give no terminal name, berth number or waiting area for Toba-Mie. The CruiseMapper wiki describes the port as a port city with a population of about 20,000, most of whose land lies within Ise-Shima National Park. The sources read do not show which berth ships use. The Isewan Ferry runs between Toba and Irago in Aichi Prefecture, but the Wikivoyage entry for it was last updated in December 2015, and it gives no fares or timetables. Confirm the berth with the ship before you plan the visit.
Into town and transport
Toba Station is the end of the Kintetsu Toba and Shima lines and the JR Sangu Line, per Wikivoyage. From Osaka a limited express takes about 2 hours. From Nagoya a Kintetsu limited express takes 1 hour 35 minutes, or the JR Central Rapid Service Mie takes 1 hour 50 minutes. Mie Kotsu’s CAN Bus gives unlimited rides around Ise, Futami and Toba, with a one-day adult pass at 1,000 yen and a child pass at 500 yen, or a two-day pass at 1,600 yen and 800 yen. The archive gives the same fares. Mikimoto Pearl Island is a five-minute walk from Toba Station, according to Wikivoyage. Taxis are not covered by the sources read, so check the fare with the driver before you start.
Sights
Mikimoto Pearl Island is the main attraction for a day in port. Wikivoyage gives opening hours of 09:00 to 17:00, an admission of 1,650 yen and English guidance. The archive says Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in creating the first cultured pearl there in 1893, and that ama divers give demonstrations. The Toba Aquarium is the other main sight. Wikivoyage gives adult admission at 2,400 yen and child at 1,200 yen, and says it is one of four aquariums with dugongs. The archive gives 12 zones and 850 kinds of aquatic life, while the CruiseMapper wiki gives about 25,000 animals and about 1,000 marine species. The newer wiki figure is used here. Toba Castle ruins are also listed.
Going further
The archive describes Ise Jingu as the centre of sightseeing around Ise, about 1.5 hours from Nagoya by Kintetsu train. Ise Jingu has 125 shrines, including Geku and Naiku. The archive says Geku is visited first, as a custom from ancient times. The old town of Oharai-machi has an 800 m street, Oharai Dori, lined with souvenir shops, confectioners, restaurants and inns. Futami’s Meotoiwa rocks are a landmark. The archive says Toshijima, Sugashima and Kamishima are reached by ferry, and Wikivoyage describes short hikes on Sugashima with views over Toba Bay.
Food & shopping
The Wikivoyage Eat, Drink, Buy and Sleep sections for Toba are empty, and the archive’s shopping and food section is also empty. The sources read therefore do not name restaurants or shops in Toba itself. In Ise, the archive describes souvenir shops, well-established confectioners, restaurants and inns along Oharai Dori. The archive also notes that Cafés with free Wi-Fi are spreading across the country. The local tourist association runs a Japanese-only guide site and a separate English-language one, which have different content. Check the English site for current food options.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Japanese yen, in notes of 10,000, 5,000 and 1,000 yen and coins of 500, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1 yen, per the archive. ATMs can usually take overseas accounts, and post offices have ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted at most shops and restaurants in large cities, but the archive warns that rural areas are cash-based, and some shops refuse cards. Wikivoyage gives no card or exchange details for Toba. Use the xe.com link for the current rate.
Practical tips
Do not tip taxi drivers, since the archive says the service is included. The rear left door is opened and closed by the driver, so do not open it yourself. For destinations that are not well known, give the driver a written address or point to a map, since the archive notes that the Japanese address system can confuse local drivers. Shops and department stores are generally open daily, including national holidays except New Year’s, from about 10:00 or 10:30 to 19:30 or 20:00. The archive is dated February 2024, and the Wikivoyage ferry entry is dated December 2015, so verify fares and hours before the visit.
Accessibility & mobility
The sources read do not describe step-free routes from the berth or access at the aquarium and pearl island. Check the walk from the berth with the ship, and ask the attractions directly about step-free access before you plan the visit.
