## Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Naha Cruise Terminal, close to the centre. The shopping street Kokusai-dori is a short walk or a monorail ride. Check your ship's notice for the berth and any shuttle.

## Watch-outs

Okinawa is hot and humid, and rain can be heavy in the wet season. The island's roads are busy, and traffic can slow trips to the north. Shops close early on some days, and the local language and customs differ from mainland Japan.

## Shuri Castle

[Shuri Castle](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Shuri+Castle+Naha) was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, and the grounds and the vermilion gates are the main sights. It is reached by bus or taxi from the port.

## Okinawa Peace Memorial Park

The [Peace Memorial Park](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Okinawa+Peace+Memorial+Park) in the south of the island marks the battle of 1945. The museum and the memorials are a serious visit. Allow at least two hours.

## Kokusai-dori and Makishi market

Kokusai-dori is the main shopping street, with souvenirs, restaurants and bars. Makishi Public Market is a short walk away, with fresh fish, fruit and local food.

## Churaumi and the north

The Churaumi Aquarium, in the north of the island, is one of the largest in Asia. It is about an hour by bus or tour, so plan the day carefully.

## Food & shopping

Okinawan food includes goya champuru, Okinawa soba and purple sweet potato. Awamori, a local spirit, is widely sold. Restaurants along Kokusai-dori are the easiest choice.

## Money & connectivity

The currency is the Japanese yen. Cards are accepted in many places, but cash is still useful. Convenience-store ATMs accept most foreign cards.

## Accessibility & mobility

The terminal and Kokusai-dori are flat. The monorail has step-free access at stations. Shuri Castle has steep stone paths and steps. Ask the operator about accessible transport.
