Getting ashore
Ships berth at Ishigaki port, close to the town of Ishigaki on the island of Ishigaki in the southern Ryukyus. Taxis wait at the port.
Watch-outs
The island is hot and humid, and typhoons can affect ship calls. Driving is on the left and roads can be narrow. Carry water and sun cover.
Kabira Bay
Kabira Bay is one of Japan’s most famous bays, with clear water and coral. Glass-bottom boat trips leave from the bay.
Mount Omoto and the rainforest
Mount Omoto offers views over the island and the ocean, and the forest trails show the island’s subtropical plants.
Reef and islands
The coral reefs around the island are good for snorkelling and diving. Boat trips visit the Yaeyama islands and the Taketomi village.
Food & shopping
Yaeyama food includes Ishigaki beef, goya champuru and fresh tropical fruit. The Ishigaki market is the place for local produce.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the Japanese yen. Cards are accepted in many places, but cash is still useful. Convenience-store ATMs accept most foreign cards.
Accessibility & mobility
The port and town are flat. Kabira Bay boats involve steps and gangways. Mountain trails are steep. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles and boats.
