Getting ashore

Jayapura is a tender port, according to the 2024 WhatsInPort archive, so passengers are carried ashore by tender boat. The archive describes a harbour backed by green hills, and says the only access to the region is by sea. Apart from a few roads around the town, travel inland is on foot or by light aircraft. The CruiseMapper wiki gives no berth details, so ask the ship about the tender arrangements before the call. The CruiseMapper schedule snapshot lists Le Soleal on 7 October 2026, which had passed by the snapshot date, and again on 31 October 2026, arriving at 11:00 and leaving at 18:00. Check the live calendar before planning.

For walkers and architecture fans

Jayapura City is the capital of Papua Province, on Yos Sudarso Bay, also called Humboldt Bay, on the northern coast of New Guinea. It is the largest city in Indonesian New Guinea. The wiki gives a population of over 300,000 (undated), while the archive gives about 200,000 for 2002. Its five districts are Muara Tami, Abepura, Heram, Selatan and Utara, and Abepura is the most populous, with about 90,000 residents. Youtefa Bridge is a free, 24-hour landmark, and Jayapura City Hill is a park with wide views over the city and bay. The General MacArthur Memorial is a basic monument about 30 km from the centre, on the road to the airport, with a strong lookout over steep terrain.

For beach lovers

Base G Beach is a quiet white-sand beach about 15 km from the centre, with free entry and rentable gazebos for groups. Base G is the quieter of the two. Hamadi Beach is a busy harbour beach with four WWII artillery emplacements and food stalls at night. Wikivoyage warns of rip-offs by some locals at Base G Beach, so agree prices before you start. The sources give no transport times to either beach, so ask the hotel or a vetted driver to arrange the trip.

For nature and outdoor fans

Lake Sentani, a large freshwater lake ringed by steep mountains, has a few guesthouses and restaurants along its edge. A highway runs from Jayapura to Skouw, near the border with Papua New Guinea, and continues to Vanimo, according to the wiki. Wikivoyage says the Skouw border markets accept both rupiah and PNG kina. Papua New Guinea is a 90-minute ride east of the city. Arso is 2 hours by land, and Sarmi is 7 hours, so both are long drives that are unlikely to fit a single port call.

For eaters and drinkers

Street food is plentiful. Barbecued seafood stalls line the road from the Swiss-Belhotel into town, satay chicken stalls cluster on the easternmost main street, and noodle soup vendors sit at one crossroads. The priciest street food runs under Rp 40,000. Rumah Laut is an upmarket seafood restaurant built on stilts over Jayapura Bay. Ungkea Jungle Resto serves traditional Papuan dishes such as papeda and ouw, and opens at 07:00. Most restaurants serve Bintang beer, but it may not be cold. The Swiss-Belhotel bar is pleasant but quiet, and the few bars in Entrop, about five minutes away, are rarely busy. The archive advises eating with the right hand only, and not sticking hands into shared dishes.

Getting around and money

Minivans cover most routes in the city. Each has its destination printed on the side, and a trip costs about Rp 6,000 per person (Wikivoyage, undated). For a private option, the Swiss-Belhotel can arrange a dedicated driver for roughly Rp 800,000 a day. The sources give no fares for city taxis, so agree a fare in advance. Dortheys Hiyo Eluay (Sentani) Airport is 30 to 40 km from the centre, and DAMRI’s state bus costs Rp 50,000 to downtown. The currency is the rupiah (IDR). ATMs are common in major Indonesian cities, but the archive warns that card cloning and fraud are a major problem. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but American Express can be problematic, and smaller operations often add a surcharge of 2 to 5% over cash. Internet costs around Rp 5,000 per hour. The archive lists 112 as the mobile emergency number.

Accessibility & mobility

The sources do not describe step-free routes or accessible transport at the port or the tender landing. Ask the ship about tender boarding before the call, and check transport options with the hotel or a vetted driver.
