Getting ashore
Ships dock at Akureyri, the largest town in the north of Iceland. The port is a short walk from the centre.
Watch-outs
Your ship crosses the Arctic Circle on the way in, and a ‘Polar Bear’ ceremony is often held on board. Weather in the north can be changeable, and the roads are long.
Akureyri
The town is a pleasant northern centre, with a botanical garden, colourful houses and the Akureyri Church, which is on a hill above the town.
Godafoss
Goðafoss , the Waterfall of the Gods, is about 45 minutes away, with a short walk to the falls.
Mývatn and the lakes
Lake Mývatn has geothermal areas, lava pseudocraters and birdlife, reached by road in about an hour.
Whales and the fjord
Whale-watching trips run from the harbour in season, with minke and humpback whales.
Food & shopping
Icelandic food includes lamb, fish stew and skyr. Cafés and restaurants in the town are the easiest choice.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the króna. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and cash is rarely needed. Mobile data is good.
Accessibility & mobility
The port and the town are mostly flat. Goðafoss has steps down to the viewpoints. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles.
