Getting ashore
Tenders land at Skala, the small and pretty port. Smaller ships can dock in the centre of Skala. The main town, Chora, is a few miles away up a winding hill. A taxi there costs about EUR 7, and you can walk back down to the port.
Watch-outs
Patmos is quiet and small, and many shops and tavernas close early in the season. Taxis are few, so book your return ride or agree a time with the driver. The road to Chora is steep, with many bends. Bring water and sun cover.
Chora and the monastery
Chora is a whitewashed hill town with narrow lanes and the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which dates from the 11th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Cave of the Apocalypse, where tradition holds that Saint John received the Book of Revelation, is below the monastery.
Beaches
Psili Ammos and Livadi are the best-known beaches on Patmos, reached by taxi or local bus in season. The water is clear and calm. Many beaches have little shade, so bring a sun shade.
Food & shopping
Greek island food is the speciality, with grilled fish, octopus and local cheeses. Tavernas in Skala and Chora offer the best choice. Local products include honey and herbs.
Money & connectivity
The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted in most places, but some small shops and tavernas take cash only. ATMs are in Skala.
Accessibility & mobility
The tender landing is the main barrier. The walk down to Skala is steep, and Chora's lanes have steps. The monastery and the cave involve stairs and uneven paths. Ask your ship about tender assistance, and a taxi for the trip to Chora.
