Getting ashore

Ships call at Nafplio, the former capital of Greece, and berth or tender passengers near the old town. Check your ship’s notice for the landing point.

Watch-outs

Nafplio is a small, hilly town with steps and cobbled streets. Shops close for the afternoon. The sun is strong in summer.

Old town and Syntagma

Syntagma Square is the heart of the town, with cafés, neoclassical buildings and the Venetian quarter. The old streets are lined with restaurants and shops.

Palamidi fortress

Palamidi is a Venetian fortress on a steep hill above the town. The climb is long, with 999 steps, and a taxi can take you to the top.

Bourtzi and the harbour

Bourtzi is a small fortress on an islet in the harbour, reached by a short boat trip. It is a pleasant excursion from the waterfront.

Epidaurus and Mycenae

The ancient theatre of Epidaurus, famed for its acoustics, and the citadel of Mycenae are reached by road in about an hour. Tours are the easiest way to visit both.

Food & shopping

Greek food includes grilled fish, lamb and local wine. The waterfront tavernas are the easiest choice, and the local honey and olive oil are good buys.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in the centre.

Accessibility & mobility

The old town is hilly with steps and cobbles. The Palamidi climb is steep. Ask your operator for accessible vehicles, and check the access at Epidaurus.
