## Getting ashore

A call sold as Chania normally uses Souda for large ships. [CruiseMapper](https://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/souda-chania-port-17202) and the municipal tourism guide distinguish the working passenger port from Chania's old Venetian harbour. Check your actual berth, passenger exit and any internal transfer with the ship. The cafés in harbour photographs are not necessarily beside your gangway.

## Getting to Chania

Use the ship's city transfer, a taxi or a current local bus plan from the approved public exit. Ask where the return stops, what the fare includes and when the final service leaves. Do not rely on the archive's five-minute bus frequency or a fixed ten-minute journey: traffic, boarding and waiting all add time. Save the Souda terminal name for a driver, since simply asking for "the harbour" can mean the wrong place.

## A satisfying old-town walk

Start beside the Venetian harbour and explore the narrow lanes behind the waterfront, with a pause around Splantzia or the old market area. The waterfront buildings, former mosque and shipyards reflect the city's Venetian and Ottoman periods. Allow roughly three hours with a café or lunch stop as a planning estimate, excluding the Souda transfers. Public lanes and harbour views need no attraction ticket; check current access before counting on a particular interior.

## The archaeological museum has moved

The [Archaeological Museum of Chania](https://amch.gr/en/plan-your-visit/) is now in Halepa, not the old Venetian church described in the archived guide. It is a separate visit from the central harbour walk. Its galleries introduce the region's archaeology from early settlement through later periods. Check the official opening, ticket and accessible route, and allow about 90 minutes inside plus transport. Choose it as your main indoor visit rather than searching for the old address.

## Beach or a longer excursion

Nea Chora is a local beach option beyond the old town; confirm swimming conditions, facilities and the walk or taxi back. Aptera, the Akrotiri monasteries and more distant beaches require road travel and their own return plan. Samaria Gorge is a demanding full excursion, not an easy add-on to a city visit. Ask about the complete port-to-port duration, walking and weather restrictions before committing.

## Food, money and returning

Look for dakos, local cheese, fish or Cretan home-style dishes. Ask about portions, ingredients and the price of fish sold by weight before ordering. Carry euros for small purchases, water and sun protection. Old-town stones can be slippery and lanes crowded. Download a map, save the shuttle pickup and leave room for road delays, port security and the final transfer to the gangway before all-aboard.

## Accessibility & mobility

Confirm gangway and transfer boarding at Souda before planning independent travel. Chania's lanes have uneven paving, kerbs and occasional steps; waterfront routes are generally easier than every alley. Arrange a suitable vehicle if needed. Ask the museum about the current accessible entrance and lifts, and check beach assistance separately.
