Getting ashore

Ships call at Agios Nikolaos on the north-east coast of Crete. Passengers land at the quay or by tender, depending on the ship. The town is compact.

Watch-outs

The town gets busy in summer, and the lake’s cafés fill up. Parking is limited. Sun is strong, so bring sun cover and water.

Lake Voulismeni

The small lake in the centre of town is a famous spot, with cafés around it and legends of a bottomless lake.

Spinalonga

Spinalonga is a former leper colony on an islet off the coast, reached by boat from the harbour. Boats run in season, and the island is a moving historical visit.

Elounda and the coast

Elounda is a short drive away, with beaches and the boats to Spinalonga. The coast has bays and small villages.

Food & shopping

Cretan food includes dakos, fresh fish, local honey and olive oil. Tavernas by the harbour are the easiest choice.

Money & connectivity

The currency is the euro. Cards are accepted in most places, and ATMs are in town.

Accessibility & mobility

The harbour and the lake area are flat. The town streets have steps. The Spinalonga boat has a boarding step. Ask your operator for accessible transport.
