## Getting ashore

Magdeburg is an Elbe river port in Saxony-Anhalt, run by Magdeburger Hafen GmbH under the code DEMAG. Check the ship's notice for the quay, how far it is to walk into the centre, and whether a shuttle runs and when. The schedule lists calls between 18 and 29 October 2026, but port timings change, so confirm your call with the cruise line before you plan a day around it. Allow a little extra time for the walk back to the river, and treat the ship's sailing time as the firm deadline.

## For walkers and architecture fans

The old town is compact, and a walk between the cathedral, the monastery and the Green Citadel is practical in a few hours. The Magdeburger Dom is the cathedral of St Maurice and St Catherine, built between 1209 and 1520 and considered Germany's first Gothic cathedral. Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen is an 11th-century Romanesque monastery that now houses an art gallery. St Johannis-Kirche has a 52 m south tower you can climb for views, open from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. The 13th-century Alte Rathaus is the old town hall, and the Magdeburger Reiter statue is shown in the Kulturhistorisches Museum. The Christmas Market draws over 1.5 million visitors a year. FC Magdeburg plays at the MDCC-Arena, about 4 km east of the centre.

## For nature and outdoor fans

Elbauenpark covers 100 hectares and holds the Millennium Tower, with exhibits on nature and human history. Rotehornpark is a 200-hectare nature park. The Kanalbrücke is a 106 m water bridge, described as Europe's longest navigable aqueduct. The Elberadweg cycle path follows the river and is marked with a white e on blue, and bikes can travel on trams, buses, ferries and the S-Bahn with an extra ticket. The Weisse Flotte runs river trips: a 1.5-hour skyline cruise at €8 for adults, the Grosse Acht at €19.90, the Kleine Acht at €14, a short lock crossing at €5 and an evening cruise at €15. Tickets are sold on board. Elbe ferries at Westerhüsen and Buckau run only from March to October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00.

## For shoppers

The main shopping sites are Karstadt, Allee-Center, which has three floors, Ulrichshaus and City Carré. Breiter Weg has shops, bars and cafés. Weekday shops open from 08:00 to 20:00. On Saturdays, large malls close at 20:00 and smaller shops at 12:00 or 18:00. Sundays are mostly closed, apart from shops at stations and petrol stations, so plan purchases for the week or for Saturday morning. The Green Citadel, Grüne Zitadelle, is a Hundertwasser building with shops and restaurants, open daily from 08:00 to 22:00.

## For eaters and drinkers

Budget places in the city centre include Curry 54, Fish 2 Go, the Bingöl-Grill near the station, Leo's Schlemmer Café, Suppenkaspar, Flinke Pfanne and Fatira, which serves Arabic food. For a mid-range meal, try Qilin for Asian food, Wenzel Prager Bierstuben, Botanica for vegan food or Hoflieferant for German dishes. For a drink, The Hyde at Sternstraße 29 opens daily from 18:00. The Green Citadel also has restaurants. Carry some cash for the smaller cafés, and ask the ship's shore excursion desk which payment methods its tours accept.

## Getting around and money

Trams are the quickest way into the centre, with ten lines and waits usually under five minutes. Line 15 is added at peak times and for events. Buses run every 10 to 20 minutes by day, and one fare zone covers trams, buses, the S-Bahn and the ferries. A single 60-minute ticket is €3.00, a day ticket €7.40 and a four-ride strip €12. Buy tickets before you board, or punch a strip ticket inside the vehicle. Taxis can be called on 737373, or 0049-391-737373 from a mobile. Fares and times change, so check them on the day. Trains from Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof reach Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Cologne and Hanover. Leipzig/Halle airport is about 50 minutes by car, or a roughly one-hour IC train costing about €23. Berlin Brandenburg is about 90 minutes by car. The currency is the euro (EUR). Save the ship's notice and tram stop name offline before you leave the ship, in case the connection drops.

## Accessibility & mobility

The sources read do not describe step-free routes at the river berth, on the trams or in the old town. Ask the cruise line about the gangway, any shuttle and the walk to the centre, and check step-free stops with the transport operator before you travel.
